How to make a picture smaller

Add one or more pictures, then pick how to shrink them. Quality trades looks for size: around 75% usually looks the same to the eye and saves most of the weight. Target file size is for upload forms with a limit: type 200 and the tool finds the highest quality that fits under 200 KB. Longest side scales the picture down as well, which is the biggest saving for large camera photos.

Pictures are saved with “-small” added to the name, so your originals are never replaced. If a result isn’t smaller than the original, the original is kept and the row says so.

Which format?

JPG is best for photos and works everywhere. WebP is usually 20 to 30 percent smaller than JPG at the same look and is supported by all current browsers. PNG is lossless and suits screenshots and logos, but it can’t be compressed by quality; resize it or switch it to WebP.

Questions

Are my pictures uploaded? No. Compression happens on a canvas in your browser; the files never leave your device.

Does it keep photo details like location? No. Re-encoding drops the hidden camera data (EXIF), including GPS location, which is also a small privacy benefit before you share a photo.

Why can’t it open my iPhone photo? iPhones can save HEIC files, which most browsers can’t read. Change Camera → Formats to “Most Compatible”, or export the photo as JPG first. To change the format only, see the Image Converter; to change the dimensions, see the Image Resizer.
