How to crop a picture

Choose a picture, then drag the white handles to change the crop area, or drag inside the box to move it. Pick a shape to lock the proportions: 1:1 for profile pictures, 16:9 for video thumbnails and slides, 4:3 or 3:2 for most photos, 3:4, 2:3 or 9:16 for upright pictures and phone screens, 4:5 and 1.91:1 for Instagram posts, and 3:1 for X (Twitter) headers. Type your own ratio, like 7:5, in the box beside them. Free lets you choose any shape. Turn rotates the picture a quarter turn left or right, or flips it like a mirror, before you crop. The size under the picture is the size of the saved file in pixels. Press Download and the cropped picture is saved to your device.

With a keyboard, click the box (or tab to it) and use the arrow keys to move it 10 pixels at a time, hold Alt for 1 pixel, and hold Shift to resize it.

Which format should I save?

PNG keeps every pixel and transparency, and makes bigger files. JPG is smaller and best for photos; it has no transparency, so any see-through parts turn white. WebP is usually the smallest at the same look and works in current browsers. Crops are cut from the original at full resolution, so nothing is shrunk unless you want it to be. To make the file smaller afterwards, use the Image Compressor.

Questions

Is my picture uploaded? No. It is opened and cropped inside your browser. Why can’t I open my iPhone photo? HEIC files aren’t supported by browsers; share or export the photo as JPG first. Will it keep the photo’s rotation? Browsers apply the rotation stored in the photo, and the crop uses what you see on screen.
