How to use it

Enter your monthly income after tax. Then, for each category, type the amount you plan to spend and, as the month goes on, the amount you actually spent. The four totals at the top show how much of your income is planned, how much is still unplanned, what you have spent, and what is left. A category turns red when you pass its plan. Rename the starter categories, remove the ones you don’t need, and add your own.

Needs, wants and savings

Categories sit in three groups. Needs are things you must pay, like rent, food, utilities and transport. Wants are things you could do without, like eating out and streaming. Savings and debt covers money set aside and extra payments. A common rule of thumb is 50% needs, 30% wants and 20% savings. It is only a starting point, shown next to each group so you can compare. In a high-rent area needs may be much more than half, and that is fine.

Questions

Where is my budget stored? Only in this browser, on this device. Nothing is sent to a server, and there is no account. Clearing site data erases it, so use Download CSV to keep a copy. How do I start a new month? Use "Start a new month" to clear the spent column and keep your plan. Can I use another currency? Change the symbol at the top. The tool only adds up the numbers you enter. For splitting a bill see the Tip & Bill Splitter.
