Word Snatch

Grab words from the middle, or steal them

Computer players

Tiles turn over one by one. Type any word of four letters or more you can make from them, or add tiles to a word someone already has and mix it into a new one to steal it. Every letter you hold is a point.

How to play

Word Snatch is the old tile game Anagrams, played live. Letter tiles turn face up in the middle one at a time, every few seconds. There are no turns: anyone can type a word whenever they see one.

  • Make a word of four letters or more from the tiles in the middle. Those tiles become yours.
  • Steal a word by adding one or more middle tiles to a word someone already has (or one of your own) and mixing them into a new word. TEAM plus S can become MEATS or MATES, and it moves to you.
  • Just adding letters to the front or back doesn’t count: TEAM to TEAMS or STEAM is refused. The letters have to move.
  • When the bag is empty, there’s a short wait for any last grabs, then the game ends. Every letter in your words is a point.

Words come from the public-domain ENABLE word list. Playing alone, you can turn the next tile over straight away.

Tips

Keep an eye on the short words around the table: four-letter words are the easiest to steal, and a longer word is safer. Letters like S, E, D and R slot into lots of words, while Q, X and Z are hard to use, so grab them when you can. Try reading the middle tiles in a different order: words often hide in plain sight.
