How to play

Everyone holds seven letter tiles. On your turn, lay one or more tiles in a single line, across or down, so they make a word joined to the tiles already on the board. The first word must cover the star in the middle. Then you draw back up to seven.

  • Tap a square, then tap your tiles to spell along it (tap the square again to go down instead of across). Or tap a tile, then a square. Tap a tile on the board to take it back. On a keyboard, click a square and type.
  • Every new word your tiles make, across and down, must be in the word list (the public-domain ENABLE list). The game tells you before you play if a word isn’t.
  • Instead of playing, you can swap some tiles for new ones (while the bag holds seven or more) or pass.
  • The two blank tiles can be any letter you pick, and score nothing.

Scoring

Each word scores the points on its tiles. Pale blue squares (2L) double a letter and dark blue (3L) triple it; pink (2W) doubles the whole word and red (3W) triples it. Bonus squares count only on the turn a tile is laid on them. Using all seven tiles in one turn earns 40 more.

The game ends when someone plays their last tile and the bag is empty: they gain the points on everyone else’s leftover tiles, and the others lose them. It also ends if everyone passes or swaps twice in a row. Highest score wins.

Tips

Learn a few two-letter words (XI, JO, OX, AX, XU, KA): they let you lay a big letter next to another word and score it twice. Adding S to the end of someone’s word scores their word again plus yours. Keep an eye on the red squares, and try not to open one up for the next player.
