Word Duel

Find their secret word first

Play the computer

You and Mallard each pick a secret five-letter word with no letter twice. Take turns guessing; each guess tells you how many of its letters are in their word, but not where. Find their word first to win.

Not in the same room? Play online while you talk on a call, each on your own phone.

How to play

  • Each player picks a secret five-letter word with five different letters, like CRANE or GHOST.
  • Take turns guessing the other player’s word. Every guess is answered with a number: how many of its letters are somewhere in their word. Where they are doesn’t count, so CRANE against REACT scores 4.
  • Guess their word exactly to win. If the player who went first finds it, the other player gets one last try, and finding theirs too makes it a draw.
  • Guesses have to be real words with no letter twice.
  • Tap the letters under the guesses to keep notes: once for “in their word”, twice for “not in it”. Your notes color your guesses too.

Tips

A guess that scores 0 is great news: none of its five letters are in their word. Two guesses that differ by one letter tell you about that letter: if the score goes up by one, the new letter is in. Once you know all five letters, think of every word they spell, since several words can share the same letters.
