How to use it

Paste or type your text, choose a voice, and press Speak. Use Pause to hold your place and Resume to carry on, or Stop to end it. The speed slider runs from half speed to double, which helps when you are proofreading (slow) or skimming (fast). Pitch makes the voice higher or lower, and volume sets how loud the voice is, separate from your device volume. The word being read is highlighted below the box in browsers that report it. Your voice and slider choices are remembered on this device.

About the voices

The voices come from your device or browser, so the list is different on a phone, a Mac, a Windows PC or a Chromebook. Some are installed with the system and work offline; others are streamed from the browser maker’s service. Voice names and quality vary, and each is tied to a language, so pick one that matches the language of your text. If the list is empty at first, give the browser a moment or press Speak once.

Questions

Can I save the speech as an audio file? No. Browsers only let a page play speech, not record it. Is my text uploaded? This page never sends it anywhere, but some browsers use an online voice service for certain voices, so avoid private text with an online voice. Why did it stop partway through a long text? Some browsers cut off very long passages; read in smaller parts. For a proofreading aid also try the Word Counter.
