Making a maze…

More info

How to use it

Pick a size, then press New maze as many times as you like until you have one you want. Easy is a 10 × 10 grid that children can finish in a minute, medium is 20 × 20, and hard is 30 × 30 with plenty of dead ends. The entrance is at the top left and the exit at the bottom right. Tick Show the way through to see the solution as a colored line on screen. Print gives a clean black and white page with the maze, and a second page with the solution marked unless you untick “Add solution page”.

How the mazes are made

Each maze is a “perfect maze”: any two squares are joined by exactly one path, so there are no loops and no sealed-off rooms, and it always can be solved. The program carves it by wandering through the grid, knocking down a wall each time it steps into a new square and backing up when it is stuck. This method tends to give long winding corridors with relatively few branches, which makes the paths look interesting and the dead ends long.

Questions

Can I print more than one? Make a maze, print it, then press New maze and print again. Why is there a gap in the border? The openings at the top left and bottom right are the entrance and the exit. Is it saved? Only your chosen size is remembered on this device, and the mazes are not uploaded anywhere. For a puzzle with words, try the Word Search Maker.
