How to make a map
- Click a state to color it. Each click goes toss-up, blue, red, then back to toss-up. On a keyboard, Tab to a state and press Enter.
- To paint many states the same way, pick a color first (such as Leans red). Every click then sets that color.
- The bar at the top adds up the votes. The first side to 270 wins. Leaning states count toward their side.
- Press Copy share link to send your map. The colors and side names are in the link, so the other person sees the same map.
Questions
Why 270? There are 538 electoral votes: one per member of the House (435) and Senate (100), plus 3 for Washington, D.C. A majority is 270.
Which vote counts does it use? The ones set by the 2020 census, used for the 2024 and 2028 elections. California has 54, Texas 40, Florida 30, and the smallest states and D.C. have 3.
What are the boxes for Maine and Nebraska? Those two states don’t give all their votes to one side. The statewide winner gets 2, and the winner in each congressional district gets 1 more. Maine has 2 districts and Nebraska has 3. Color the state for the statewide votes and the boxes for the districts.
What happens at 269 to 269? Nobody has a majority, so the new House of Representatives picks the president, with one vote per state delegation.
What are the starting maps? 2024 result is how the states and districts voted in 2024 (312 to 226). 2020 states colors each state the way it voted in 2020, counted with today’s votes, so it adds up to 303 to 235 rather than the 306 to 232 of that year.
Is my map saved? Yes, in this browser. Nothing is sent to a server, and there’s no sign-up.
The state outlines come from the US Census Bureau’s public boundary files.
