How to make a beat

  1. Press Play. A starter beat is already in pattern A, so you hear something straight away. Or pick another under Start from.
  2. Tap squares in the drum grid to add or remove hits. Each row is one drum, each column a 16th note, and the four groups are the four beats of a bar. Tap a drum’s name to hear it.
  3. Add a bass line in the grid below: one note per step, higher rows are higher notes. Pick the key, minor or major, and the sound.
  4. Make up to four patterns (A to D). Copy A to… is a quick way to start a variation.
  5. Build a song by adding patterns in order, then press Play song.
  6. Balance the sounds in the mixer: M mutes a track, S plays only the soloed tracks.
  7. Download WAV saves the pattern (repeated as many times as you choose) or the whole song as a sound file.

On a keyboard: Space plays and stops, and 1 to 4 pick patterns A to D.

Questions

What is swing? It pushes every second 16th note a little later, which gives hi-hats a bouncy, laid-back feel. 50% is straight; hip-hop often sits around 55–62%.

Is my beat saved? Yes, on this device, every time you change something. Copy share link puts the whole beat in a link you can send to a friend or open on another device. Nothing is uploaded.

Can I use the beats I make? Yes. Every sound is made by your browser from simple waves and noise, not from sample packs, so the beats are yours to use however you like.

No sound on my phone? Check that the phone isn’t on silent. Browsers only play sound after you tap something, so press Play first.

Can I record my own sounds or use more steps? Not yet. This is a small beat maker for sketching ideas; tell us what you’d like with “Suggest a feature” below.
