Spoons

Four of a kind, then grab a spoon

How many computer players?

Pass cards round as fast as you can. Get four of a kind and grab a spoon; there’s one fewer than players.

How to play

Everyone holds four cards. In the middle there’s one spoon fewer than there are players. The deck has all four suits of a few more ranks than there are players, so fours come round quickly.

There are no turns: everyone plays at once. The dealer draws from the deck. Everyone else picks up the cards passed to them, one at a time. Whenever you hold five cards, tap one to pass it to the next player. The last player’s cards go to a pile that becomes the deck again.

When you have four of a kind, grab a spoon. As soon as any spoon is gone, everyone may grab one, four of a kind or not. Whoever is left without a spoon is out.

Grab before anyone else, without four of a kind, and you’re out instead. Each round puts one player out and takes away one spoon. The last player left wins.

Tips

Pick one rank to collect and pass everything else straight away; speed matters more than clever choices. Keep an eye on the spoons, not just your cards: the moment one goes, grab. If the cards are piling up for you, someone downstream is waiting.
