Spin Five

Five in a row, with a twist

Who are you playing?

Put down a marble, then turn one corner of the board a quarter turn. First to get five in a row wins, but every turn can wreck a line, yours included.

How to play

The board is 6 × 6, made of four corners of 3 × 3 that can each turn. One player has black marbles and the other white.

Your turn has two parts. First, put one of your marbles on any empty space. Then turn any one of the four corners a quarter turn, clockwise or the other way. Every turn includes a twist, even if it’s a corner with nothing in it.

Get five of your marbles in a row, across, down or diagonally, and you win. If placing your marble already makes five, you win straight away without turning. If your twist makes five for your rival, they win; if it makes five for both of you at once, or the board fills up, it’s a draw.

Tips

Lines that cross from one corner into the next are the hardest to stop, because a single twist can line them up. The middle space of each corner never moves when it turns, so a marble there stays put. And when your rival has four, remember you can turn their line apart as well as block the gap.
