Speed

Everyone plays at once

Computer players

No turns: everyone plays at the same time. Put down any card one higher or lower than a middle pile (ace and king are next to each other). Your hand refills from your stack. First to play every card wins.

Not in the same room? Play online while you talk on a call, each on your own phone.

How to play

  • There are no turns. Everyone plays at the same time onto the two piles in the middle.
  • You can play any card one higher or one lower than the top of either pile, whatever its suit. An ace is next to both the 2 and the king, so the ranks go round in a circle.
  • You hold five cards. Each time you play one, a new card comes from your stack.
  • When nobody can play, or nobody has played for six seconds, a card from each side pile flips onto the middle piles. When the side piles run out, the middle piles are shuffled into new ones.
  • The first player to play every card, hand and stack, wins.

Tips

Watch both piles at once and look for runs in your hand: with a 6, 7 and 8 you can play all three in a row. When a card fits both piles, pick the one that leaves your next card a place to go. If two players go for the same pile at once, the first card to arrive counts.

About the game

Speed is an old shedding game for two, also known as Spit. Here two to four players can join, which makes the middle piles even busier.
