How to play

The box has nine tiles, numbered 1 to 9, all open. On your turn, roll two dice and shut any open tiles that add up to the roll: a 7 could shut the 7, or the 3 and 4, or 1, 2 and 4. Then roll again.

Once the 7, 8 and 9 are all shut, you may roll just one die if you like.

Your turn ends when you can’t shut tiles that match the roll. Your score for the round is the total of the tiles still open. Shut every tile and you’ve shut the box: you score 0.

Everyone takes a turn each round. After the last round, the lowest total wins.

Tips

Big tiles are the hardest to shut later, so close the 9, 8 and 7 while two dice make them easy. When you have a choice, shutting one big tile usually beats shutting two small ones, since small tiles are easy to match with one die at the end. The computer players here play the odds exactly; with perfect play the average score is about 11.
