Pond Curling

Slide stones up the ice and stop them nearest the middle

Computer players

Ends

Take turns sliding stones towards the rings. When all are thrown, whoever is nearest the middle scores a point for each stone closer than anyone else’s.

How to play

Players take turns sliding stones from the near end of the ice towards the rings at the far end. Two players throw four stones each per end; three or four players throw three each.

  • Aim picks the direction. Tap the ice where you want the stone to stop, or use the sliders.
  • Weight is how hard you throw. The dotted circle shows where the stone would stop if it went straight.
  • Turn: every stone drifts to one side as it slows, more and more near the end. Pick left or right and aim a little the other way.
  • A stone that stops before the red hog line, goes past the back line or touches the side is taken off.

Scoring

When everyone has thrown, the end is scored. Only stones touching the rings count. The player with the stone nearest the middle scores one point for each of their stones that is nearer than every other player’s nearest stone. Nobody else scores. The player who scored throws first in the next end, so the others get the last throw. Most points after the last end wins.

Tips

A stone just short of the rings is a guard: it blocks straight throws at the stones behind it, and a turning stone can curl round it. Throwing last is a big help, so when you throw first, keep things simple. To knock a stone out, push the weight up near the top and aim straight at it; the harder you throw, the less it turns.
