How to play

One Clue is a word game you play as a team. Each card, one player is the guesser and doesn’t look. Everyone else sees the secret word and secretly writes a one-word clue for it. Then the clues are compared: any clue that matches another one is thrown out, and so is any clue that contains the word itself. Before the guesser sees them, the clue writers can also strike clues that are too close to each other, such as “run” and “running”.

The guesser gets whatever clues are left and has one guess. A right answer scores a point for the group. A wrong guess loses that card and the next one too, so if you’re not sure, you can pass and lose only the current card. The guesser changes every card. Play 7 or 13 cards and see how many you get.

Tips

The obvious clue is a trap: if the word is “beach”, three people will write “sand” and all three cancel out. Think about what the others will write and pick something a little different that still points at the word. A great game is 11 or more out of 13.

One phone or online

On one phone, pass it round: each clue writer types a clue behind a “pass the phone” screen, the writers check the clues together, then the guesser takes the phone. To play with friends on a call, use Play online (when it’s available): everyone writes on their own phone and the guesser only ever gets the clues that survive.

Is anything saved? No. Clues stay on your devices while you play and are gone when you close the page.
