The Slav Defence, move by move

Against the Queen's Gambit, Black holds d5 with c6 and keeps the light-squared bishop free. You play Black. Opening code D17.

  1. 1. d4 White takes the centre.
  2. 1… d5 Black matches it.
  3. 2. c4 The Queen's Gambit.
  4. 2… c6 Black holds d5 and keeps the c8 bishop's diagonal open.
  5. 3. Nf3 White develops.
  6. 3… Nf6 Black develops and guards d5.
  7. 4. Nc3 More pressure on d5.
  8. 4… dxc4 Now Black takes the pawn, because b5 can protect it.
  9. 5. a4 Stops b5, so White will win the pawn back.
  10. 5… Bf5 The bishop comes out, the idea Black played c6 for.
  11. 6. e3 Opens the f1 bishop's path to c4.
  12. 6… e6 Opens the f8 bishop's path.
  13. 7. Bxc4 White wins the pawn back.
  14. 7… Bb4 Pins the knight on c3 and gets ready to castle.
  15. 8. O-O White castles.
  16. 8… O-O Black castles. Every Black piece has a good square: a model Slav.

The plan from here

Develop the c8 bishop outside the pawn chain, then play e6, Nbd7 and castle with a solid centre.
