The King's Indian Defence, move by move

- 1. d4 White takes the centre.
- 1… Nf6 Black controls e4 with a piece and keeps options open.
- 2. c4 White gains more space.
- 2… g6 Prepares to put the bishop on g7.
- 3. Nc3 White prepares e4.
- 3… Bg7 The bishop on the long diagonal will press against White's centre.
- 4. e4 White builds a big pawn centre.
- 4… d6 Stops e5 for now and prepares Black's own e5.
- 5. Nf3 White develops.
- 5… O-O Black castles early: this king is very safe behind the fianchetto.
- 6. Be2 White develops and gets ready to castle. This is the Classical line.
- 6… e5 Black hits the centre, the move the whole setup was built for.
- 7. O-O White castles.
- 7… Nc6 Puts more pressure on d4.
- 8. d5 White closes the centre and gains space on the queenside.
- 8… Ne7 The knight heads for the kingside, and f5 comes next. Both sides attack on opposite wings.
The plan from here
Once the centre locks with d5, play f5 and throw the kingside pawns at White's king.
