Fox Trap

Pen the fox, or take the ducks

Who are you playing?

Thirteen ducks try to pen in a fox. The fox jumps ducks to take them, and wins with six. Ducks only move forward or sideways, so every step counts.

How to play

This is the old fox and geese game, played for centuries on a cross-shaped board of 33 points. One player has thirteen ducks, the other a single fox. The ducks move first.

Ducks move one step along a line, forward or sideways, but never back. The fox moves one step in any direction along a line, or jumps over a duck next to it onto an empty point straight beyond, taking that duck off the board. After a jump, the fox may keep jumping if it can, or stop.

The ducks win if the fox can’t move. The fox wins by taking six ducks, if the ducks can’t move, or if it’s still free after the ducks have made 100 moves.

Tips

As the ducks, advance in a solid line, and keep a duck behind any duck the fox can reach, so there’s no point for it to land on. Don’t leave gaps when you move forward. As the fox, stay in the open and wait for a gap: one careless duck move can open a double jump.
