Duck Trail

A walk with stops along the way

How many computer players?

Whoever is furthest behind walks next, as far as they like. Every stop gives something: souvenirs, hot springs, views, coins or a chat with a stranger, and a meal at each inn. Skip ahead and you miss the stops in between.

How to play

Everyone walks the same trail, from the first inn to the last, over four stretches with an inn at the end of each. Whoever is furthest behind always moves next (on a shared stop, the last to arrive goes first). Walk as far forward as you like, but only to a free stop and never past the next inn. Every stop you skip is one you miss, but walking only a little lets the others go first.

With two or three players each stop holds one duck; with four or five, two.

The stops

Shop: see three souvenirs and buy any you can pay for. Souvenirs come in four kinds; each set of different kinds scores 1, 3, 5 and 7 for the first, second, third and fourth kind in it. Hot spring: 2 or 3 points. Shrine: give 1 to 3 coins, a point each. Farm: 3 coins. Stranger: a little surprise, like coins, points, a souvenir or a piece of a view.

Lookouts: each adds the next piece of its view: the lake has 3 pieces, the hills 4 and the coast 5. Pieces score 1, 2, 3 and so on, and the first to finish each view gets 3 more. You can’t stop at a lookout for a view you’ve finished.

Inns: everyone must stop. The first to arrive lays out one meal per player and one more; each player can buy one dish they haven’t eaten before, for 6 points.

The end

When everyone reaches the last inn, prizes are added: 10, 7, 4 and 2 for the biggest givers at shrines, and 3 points each for the most hot springs, the most strangers met, the most souvenirs and the most coins spent on meals. The most points wins.
