How to play

Everyone starts a sheet by writing a short phrase, something fun to draw like “a penguin playing guitar”. Stuck? Tap Give me one. Then the sheets move one player along. You see only the last thing on the sheet you’re handed: if it’s a phrase, draw it; if it’s a drawing, write what you think it shows. Then the sheets move on again.

With five or more players each sheet gets two drawings and two guesses; with fewer, every other player gets each sheet once. At the end the sheets are shown one step at a time, from the first phrase to the last guess, so everyone can see where the message went wrong. There are no points.

One phone or online

On one phone, pass it round at each step: the game tells you whose turn it is and shows each person only what they need. There’s no timer. Online (when it’s available), everyone plays at once on their own phone while you talk on a call, with a timer for each step: 45 seconds to write and 60, 90 or 120 seconds to draw. When the time runs out, whatever you have is passed on.

Tips

Draw the main thing big and clear first, then add details if there’s time. Don’t write letters or numbers in your drawing. When guessing, describe what you see in a few words; a guess that’s a little off is what makes the reveal fun. Phrases with two things doing something together (“a dog driving a bus”) drift in the best ways.
