How to play

The whole deck is dealt out, so everyone starts with about the same number of cards. Turns ask for each rank in order: aces first, then twos, threes and so on up to kings, then aces again. On your turn, put one to four cards face down on the pile and say they are the rank being asked for: “two sevens”. They don’t have to be. If you have no sevens, you still have to play something.

The next player can call bluff before taking their own turn. The cards are turned over: if any of them isn’t the rank that was said, the player who played them picks up the whole pile. If they were all true, the caller picks it up. Then the caller takes their turn as usual.

The first player to get rid of every card wins, but only if their last play stands. When someone plays their last cards, the next player chooses: call bluff, or let them win.

Playing together

Seat three to six players in any mix of people and computer players. With more than one person on one device, each hand stays hidden until its owner taps their name, so pass the phone round and make sure nobody peeks. Bluffing is more fun with faces, so Play online (when it’s available) works best with everyone in the same room on their own phones.

Tips

Count your own cards: if you hold three kings and someone plays two, one of them is lying. A big pile is a big risk for everyone, so calls get more dangerous as the game goes on. Look ahead too: if the rank coming up for you in a few turns is one you hold, keep those cards, and get rid of ranks that won’t come round to you for a while. Telling the truth when everyone expects a lie is the best bluff of all.
